Karen Leaf - Sports Massage Therapist

I'm Karen, Sports Massage Therapist at Stadium Sports Massage, lucky enough to be based here at York Yoga Studio.  I have been with the studio now for five years. Sports Massage can improve blood and lymph flow, help with injury prevention and get rid of every day stresses and strains.  Many of my clients are working towards a particular sporting event and requiring their muscles to be in good condition through deep tissue massage. I enjoy helping people on this journey.  I also offer rehabilitation and stretching exercises to help you work towards reaching your goals.  But, sometimes we don't have to be working towards a goal, the busy lifestyles we lead sometimes mean we require a massage to release shoulders from everyday activity such as desk work or driving. I trained in Sports Massage so because I don't want people to live in pain and discomfort. If I can help you, please contact me on 07720 057079 or email me at

Nicky Thomas - Acupuncturist

In addition to teaching Yoga, Tai Chi and Qi Gong, Nicky also practises acupuncture at York Natural Health and York Yoga Studio, as well as teaching students who are doing a three year degree course in Chinese Medicine at the Teaching Clinic at the Northern College of Acupuncture.

Nicky began her four-year study of Chinese Medicine in 1996 after her interest was kindled by a visit to China. She was drawn to its natural, sustainable and holistic approach.  She is passionate about offering people different perspectives to healthcare having been inspired by the Chinese model, where Western and Chinese medicine approaches are integrated in a positive way to help people regain health and balance.

Nicky is dedicated to making the experience of having acupuncture one in which you have time to be listened to and understood, and feel supported through the physical and emotional challenges that you may be facing.  After all these years of practising, she is still inspired by how the insertion of very fine needles can bring about such profound and life-altering changes in a person’s energy, sleep, stress and pain levels.

Nicky Thomas is a fully qualified member of the British AcupunctureCouncil.  Have a look at Nicky's website at email her at or phone her on 07583 291616

Catherine King - Medical Herbalist -BSc (Hons) Herbal Medicine (NIMH)

I trained at Lincoln College, achieving a 1st Class degree in Herbal Medicine and was awarded the Arthur Baker Award for best graduate presented by The National Institute of Medical Herbalists (NIMH). I was inspired to study herbal medicine because although its roots are in traditional and folk use, it is also grounded in evidence as the active chemical compounds of plants can now be identified and studied for their medicinal purposes. When I came to study herbal medicine, I was looking for a more holistic way of working with people to restore health and well-being. Along the journey I learnt there was so much more to herbal medicine than just the science! For me the discipline brings together science, holistic healthcare and the power and wisdom of nature.

As a herbalist, I seek to treat the whole person with the use of plants using roots, leaves, flowering parts, seeds and bark. Whilst the alleviation of symptoms is the prime focus, whole body systems are addressed and balanced in order to correct the underlying cause of disharmony or disease. In this way, herbs offer a credible alternative to allopathic medicine. As a medical herbalist I am trained in the same diagnostic and examination skills as a GP and trained in drug/herb interactions and will prescribe accordingly with consideration for safety. I treat a wide range of conditions including menopausal symptoms, premenstrual difficulties, eczema, psoriasis, fatigue, anxiety and stress. I have a background as a substance use counsellor and offer specialism in recovery from alcohol and substance use using herbal medicine and 5-point auricular acupuncture. The 5 – point acupuncture is a useful tool in treatment for symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety and night sweats.

I give public talks and workshops on the subject of herbal medicine and medicine making, keen to bring this wonderful knowledge of plants and their medicine back to its roots, in the community.
