Family yoga is an informal session that brings together elements of traditional yoga practice, creativity and mindfulness. It is designed to create family bonds and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Whole Body Somatic Tune up

A Full Day Immersion in Somatic Movement

This 5hr workshop offers a ‘re-boot’ for your ‘brain-body’ by providing you with the opportunity to retrain your neuromuscular system using somatic movement sequences.

Chronic contractions and excess tightness held in the body act like having the brakes on at all times. These unconscious behaviours, held in the brain, only become apparent when we begin to experience the long term effects in the body:

Aches and pains
Imbalances
Postural issues
Limitations in everyday activities

In a Yoga practise these chronic contractions and excess tensions can show up as difficulties such as limited forward folding, restriction in back bends, ease in rotating in one direction and difficulty rotating in the other, they can also show up as difficulties with Pranayama and breathing.

Somatic Movement sequences taught in this workshop will give you the tools to take the brakes off enabling you to experience a richer deeper Yoga practise with more freedom and ease moving into, through & out of asanas and beyond.

This workshop is inspired by the work of Thomas Hanna and Hanna Somatic Education (HSE) which he developed in the 1980s. It is a form of neuromuscular re-education, which deals with cause, not just the symptoms. Repeated behaviours and stresses can cause underlying tightness in the body, which we may not even sense straight away. Over time this can lead to what's called Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA) - a lack of awareness of the muscles being held, which is really a break down in the communication of sensory information from body to brain. This is often the underlying cause of multiple common conditions such as:

Back aches
Restrictions in shoulder movement
SI Joint issues
Neck pain, hip pain, joint pain
Postural issues
Shallow breathing
Uneven leg length

The movements taught in this workshop can begin to undo the unconsciously held tension patterns that lie underneath these conditions and give you a greater sense of awareness of your own body, AND you can keep doing this for yourself beyond the duration of the workshop!

This workshop is appropriate for all, regardless of general physical ability. The only requirement for attending is the ability to get down and up from the ground and to be able to lie on your front, back and/or sides for a period of time. Bring your own mat/cushion/blanket and any other props you may need to assist your comfort in lying and sitting on the floor.

The price for this workshop is £50

Join Susan Bradley for a beautiful half day relaxation retreat at the lovely York Yoga Studios supporting self-care, nurturing and deep relaxation during pregnancy. Suitable for all pregnant women from 14 weeks onwards right up to birth. Come and relax, connect and feel you are really taking time for YOU in your pregnancy. This is a special afternoon where you will feel so relaxed, so nourished and so nurtured. Perfectly taking place on a Friday, so you can start the weekend early!

What we’ll do:
~ The retreat will begin with fresh fruit, juice / smoothies or nourishing hot drinks (weather dependent!) on arrival.
~ We’ll do a short gentle movement based yoga practice to ease and aches and niggles and gently stretch and ease your pregnant body.
~ Followed by yoga and hypnobirthing breathing practices to find space in our hearts and calm and ground body and mind.
~ We’ll take up some delicious restorative postures for pregnancy, where you can really let your body deeply relax and find stillness in your mind.
~ We’ll do a guided visualisation and meditation to connect you to your pregnancy as you find calmness & ease. With a relaxing soundscape, as the sounds wash over you they’ll support you to release and let go.
~ Finally a yoga nidra (a deep guided relaxation) for pregnancy where you can really enjoy some time to let go and just be in your body.
~ We’ll close our afternoon with delicious and nutritious refreshment, perfect for nourishing yourself and your baby. Homemade cake (of course!), healthy homemade treats & chocolates and refreshing drinks. Taking some time together to share and connect with liked-minded pregnant women
~ We’ll also use amazing organic essential oils to aid relaxation, and spend time practicing mindfulness techniques to connect you to your pregnancy.

We’ll finish each session in meditation. If we go into the challenges of our day already calm and composed, it is much easier to hold onto inner peace no matter what the day may bring.

Yoga for Better Sleep ~ a workshop with Yoga For Modern Life

Modern Life is frankly pretty damn exhausting. The world seems to be ever speeding up, and there seems to be less and less time to slow down and to rest and to sleep. Even when we go to bed, actually nodding off can take time and our mind is still whizzing, our body still wired and can't keep still.

'there does not seem to be one major organ within the body, or process within the brain, that isn't optimally enhanced by sleep....the physical and mental impairments caused by one night of bad sleep dwarf those caused by an equivalent absence of food or exercise" Sleep scientist Matthew Walker in the book 'Why We Sleep'.

Sleep is essential and amazing, so really something has to change. We need to find ways to wind down, to sleep better and for longer. In this workshop we'll integrate the science of sleep with yoga, and learn how yoga can make an effective difference.

We'll explore a range of yoga practices including:
~ mindful and calming movement, to soothe the body and ease out tightness and tension.
~ restorative yoga using lots of bolsters, blankets and props to help the body to deeply release accumulated stress and tension, and to aiding breathing whilst allowing the body to find deep rest, replenishment and inner calm
~ breathing practices to calm the nervous system, restore balance and help to still the mind
~ using meditation to calm the chattering busy mind
~ we’ll explore some other simple relaxation techniques that can help you to sleep
~ We’ll end with a long guided relaxation called a Yoga Nidra for better sleep (Yoga Nidra actually means 'yogic sleep'). This is a deeply relaxing practice (as the name suggests!) done lying down, that really calms the mind. You’ll also receive a copy of this as an MP3 to take with you, and to use at home.

In addition we'll also look at different ways of using aromatherapy and essential oils, soothing herbs and herbal drinks, and creating an effective bed time ritual to wind down.

You'll leave with a whole 'yoga for better sleep' toolkit, with a series of yoga tools for facilitating better sleep and with numerous benefits for our overall health.

A gentle workshop with the Feldenkrais mind-body method of improving movement and well-being. For all ages and abilities.

We will explore the mobility of all areas of our centre - our spine and pelvis. As we start to find how to distribute movements along the whole spine and into the pelvis, the areas that are overworked will give up their effort as unused parts start to join in.

Expect to feel reduced strain in 'busy' parts of the spine, like the neck and lumbar / low back. Peripheral areas like elbows and wrists will gain more support when your centre is more integrated. Your whole self will feel greater ease. You will:

Caroline is associated with the Bradford and District Iyengar Yoga Institute and works largely in the Colne area. She has been practising Iyengar yoga for more than 19 years and teaching for 14 years.
She is a committed and enthusiastic teacher who has studied with a number of the UK s senior teachers. She has a particular interest in Yoga therapy having worked with Alan Brown in the weekly therapy class for 8 years, and she is also very interested in the philosophy that underpins yoga practice.

This session is appropriate for Iyengar yoga teachers and students who have regularly attended Iyengar Yoga classes for at least one year, or who have been invited by their own Iyengar teachers.

Finding your Feet - A gentle Feldenkrais method workshop

Go deeper and luxuriate with three hours of nourishing movement.

Your feet are your foundation. They are your interface with the ground. They are expected to bear your weight, adjust to varying surfaces and keep you in equilibrium.

Popular sayings suggest their importance as sources of resilience, adaptability and power – “stand on your own two feet”, “think on your feet” and “put your best foot forward”.

As babies, our feet start out with as much potential for agility as our hands. Yet, day to day, we get used to keeping feet relatively immobile within shoes. Ankle, knee and hip tightness or compensations can be related to an incomplete use of the feet.

In this workshop we will heighten your awareness of your feet and ankles’ possibilities for movement. We will use minimum effort with maximum curiosity. You will sense a greater connection to the ground, a more effortless sense of balance from the bottom up and a walk with ease and power. Your whole self will feel greater ease.

You will lie on mats on the floor and be guided through movement explorations. The teacher will help everyone be comfortable and answer questions about the method and why it works to improve mobility.

Spring Equinox Gathering Sound Experience

Join Christian (Sound Journey with Christian) and Craig (Soulshine Life) for this unique Sound Experience.

We have created a Soundscape that combines our instruments in a session to greet the new energies of Spring. A time of balance, harmony, growth, rejuvenation and revitalisation.

We will settle down with a short guided meditation which will flow into the Soundscape. Combining didgeridoos, gongs, singing bowls, hand pans and steel drums, flutes, the frame drum, various percussion and chimes.

The sound journey is designed to leave you feeling cleansed, refreshed and restored. With new energy to move into a more active time of year.

We are so excited to share this unique creation with you, in the wonderful space of York Yoga Studio.

Further Details:

Arrival from 7:00pm for a 7:15pm start. (Finish at 9pm)

Unfortunately, late arrivals will be unable to join the session once we have started.

Please bring any additional mats, blankets, pillows etc to keep yourself comfortable. Wear warm practical clothing and you may like to bring a bottle of water to sip.
